Haramaya University’s Administrative Board awards the rank of full Professorship in Cultural and Social analysis to Dr Jeylan Woliyie
Dr. Jeylan Wolyie Hussein was born on 16 July 1970 at a rural village of Bale-Robe, Oromiya. He attended his primary education at Galama Primary School and his junior and secondary educations at Robe Senior Secondary School. He joined Addis Ababa University in September 1989 and graduated with B.A Degree in English Language and Literature in July 1994.
From October 1994-August 1998, Dr. Jeylan worked as a language and culture expert in the then Culture and Information Bureau of the Regional State of Oromia. This provided him the opportunity to make extensive ethnographic inquiries in different zones and districts of Oromia and grasp the material, moral, social-psychological and ethno-spiritual foundation of the people.
In September 1998, Dr. Jeylan joined the Addis Ababa University’s School of Graduate Studies and obtained M.A in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) in July 2000. Between 2003 and 2005 he pursued an M.A programme in Social Sciences for Critical Educators at Umeau University (Sweden) through a training modality that blended semi-distance and face-to-face approaches. This programe exposed Dr. Jeylan to a vast array of philosophical and theoretical stances on the role of education in creating critically thinking democratic citizens and in fighting injustice and equipped him with practical skills on how to carry out critical educational researches. He did his thesis under the supervision of the late Professor Dr. Lars Dahlstrom of the Umeau University, Sweden and passed the thesis defense with distinction.
From August 2000 to date, Dr. Jeylan has been teaching various undergraduate and graduate courses at Haramaya University. He has so far supervised and examined over 100 different Master’s students in the Haramaya University. He also worked as an external examiner of over 25 Masters and 10 PhD students of other universities in Ethiopia and 1 PhD candidate of a university in South Africa. His other professional services include active involvement as an anonymous reviewer of over 10 different articles submitted for publication in international journals.
Dr. Jeylan has held various administrative positions since he joined the Haramaya University. Among the positions he held are assistant dean of students, head of the university’s public relations office and dean of College of Social Sciences and Humanities. What is more, he has been activity participating in various administrative committees of the university. For example, he was part of one of the sub-committees formulated to devise the University’s Business Process Reengineering (BPR). He was also a member of the team that revised and refined the University’s Senate Legislation. Overall, he made immense contributions in editing and organizing the university’s academic and administrative documents.
Dr. Jeylan graduated with PhD in Peace & Conflict Resolution through the PhD by Research Scheme of the Haramaya University in July 2016. The title of his PhD dissertation is ‘Analysis of dynamics of intercommunity conflict at Oromo-Somali Ethnic Frontiers: The Case of Jarso-Girhi conflict.’ His analysis of the Jarso-Girhi conflict was set within broader socio-historical and contemporary politico-legal contexts. He did his PhD under the chairmanship of Professor Fekadu Beyene Kenei and published five articles out of his dissertation all in reputable international journals. He was examined by Professor Habtamu Wondimu and Dr. Ayalew Gebre of the Addis Ababa University and passed his viva with Excellent Grade.
Dr. Jeylan’s research expertise and academic interests span across broader issues of social, cultural, socio-political and educational concerns. Since 2004, he has published 34 articles in reputable international journals and two edited book chapters. Some of his other works are being considered for publication in various international journals.
